Why Many Darien Residents Are Concerned About Foundry Ridge
When a major energy project is proposed in a rural community, residents deserve the opportunity to understand not only what is being built, but why it matters.
That’s why so many people throughout Darien and the surrounding area have spent the past several months reading environmental documents, attending meetings, asking questions, and speaking with neighbors.
This is not simply about being "for" or "against" one project.
It’s about understanding what this proposal could mean for the future of our community.
What is being proposed?
The Foundry Ridge Energy Center is a proposed natural gas-fired power plant planned just outside the Village of Darien.
The project would occupy many acres of agricultural land and become part of Wisconsin's rapidly changing energy landscape.
Although the project is currently being reviewed as a merchant generating facility, We Energies has already expressed interest in purchasing the facility if it is built. That possibility makes the long-term implications especially important to consider.
Why are residents concerned?
Every resident may have different reasons for supporting or opposing the project.
Some of the most common concerns include:
Air quality and emissions
Noise and lighting
Property values
Community character
Agricultural land conversion
Wildlife habitat
Water use
Public health
Emergency planning
The cumulative impacts of additional energy and industrial development
Many residents also question whether Wisconsin should continue approving large infrastructure projects individually without first understanding how they interact with one another across an entire region.
The bigger picture
Foundry Ridge is not the only major project being proposed in southern Wisconsin.
Large data centers, transmission lines, substations, renewable energy facilities, natural gas infrastructure, and other industrial developments are all being planned simultaneously.
Each project may be evaluated separately.
But communities experience them together.
That is why many residents believe cumulative impacts deserve far greater consideration before additional approvals are granted.
